#OldSchool: Something About Georgetown High School (TX)

Constructed: 1923-24
Demolished: NA
Address: 507 East University Avenue

This Spanish Colonial Revival-style building has served the Georgetown, Texas, community for well over 80 years. The location was the original site of Southwestern University from 1875 until 1916. Georgetown built its first high school here in 1923, and this structure has been in constant use by the school district since, first as a junior high and then as an elementary school until 1999. Additions to the building have included the gymnasium and cafeteria in the 1940s, the music building in the 1960s, and, after extensive internal and external remodeling, an eastern wing in 2002.

Incidentally, the school's northwestern façade is featured in the opening scenes of the 1993 film Dazed and Confused, which was shot in and around the Austin area. Much of the school, as depicted in the movie, is no longer visible: the school bus pickup area was converted into green space; the tennis courts on the western side of the campus have been paved over for administrative parking; and the fire escape slides have been removed.
