As opposed to what, a dead nativity? These are usually interesting if only to see what wise men without a dress code are wearing. Kid with a false beard wearing flannel and holding a gold spray-painted goblet. Check. Girl in jeans with an old-sheet-for-veil covering her head, sitting cross-legged on straw? Check. Embarrassed kid with his back to the onlookers holding a crook and unsure who actually owned a crook to lend for the evening? Check. (C)
Candy Land Obstacle Course
The sidewalk encircling the courthouse is colored with chalk and kids of all ages maneuver around painted Styrofoam elements called “Candy Cane Forest” and “Gumdrop Mountains”. Seems mundane enough. How much would you give to have real live molasses out there, too? (C+)
Downtown Business Light Show
Most business on the square get into the spirit of Christmas Present with strands of multi-colored lights crisscrossing upper stories or ground-level window displays. It doesn’t seem a stretch for the electronics store to pull this off. Café on the Square looks presentable as well. The Historical Museum likes to display Christmases from when the city was founded, so expect mannequins in Nineteenth Century dress, lots of candles, and copies of “Yes, Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus” doubling as coupons for half-off on admission sometime next year. Horse-Drawn Rides
There is no snow for dashing through or fields to go over or even a sleigh. Laughing at such a thing is doable, if only because some kids get a chuckle from mounds of horse apples. But it’s not the horse’s fault. (B)
Elementary School Carolers
Chances are, if you didn’t redeem your complimentary tickets to see your neighbor’s kids in the elementary school talent show or theater program you aren’t going to want to see or hear them go through the motions outdoors with Christmas songs, either. But since they make up part of the “live entertainment,” you can’t easily drown them out. (B-)
