Today is the punch line to a riddle I created 30-plus years ago, although I was never sure how clever it was. The question was thus:
New Year's Day...Groundhog Day......what day comes next?
The answer was supposed to be today, March 3.
My thinking was that the first holiday on the list was the first day of the first month and the second holiday was the second day of the second month. Naturally, the third day of the third month follows – although there isn't much happening today - outside Girl’s Day in Japan.
That today isn’t a holiday was what always tripped people on this bit of nonsense. I initially didn’t ask what day comes next but, just what comes next? Saint Patrick’s Day was the usual, if misguided, answer. I understood the assumption, but it was not what I had in mind.
I realized later how Cinco de Mayo (fifth day of the fifth month), D-Day (sixth day of the sixth month), and Armistice Day (the eleventh day of the eleventh month) also fit this unique series. Is it a series? It's not much of one until someone comes up with something to celebrate today or April 4.
What are you celebrating today?
