Operation Assassination: Lincolnisms vs. Kennedyms - Part IV

We're celebrating Operation Assassination, a trivia-laden white paper I compiled 25 years ago that indirectly spawned this blog. In 2000, I combined my original paper with material I found online that I published on a GeoCities account. As part of this retrospect, I revisited what I found and republished the information.

The Wives
  1. Both were female.

  1. Both were married during their thirties
  2. Both President's wives were known by three names
    1. Mary Todd Lincoln
    2. Jaquiline Bouvier Kennedy (later Jackie Kennedy Onassis)
  3. Both wives had been previously engaged
  4. Both lost a sister to death before being husbands were elected president
  5. Both wives were from socially prominent families
  6. Both wives spoke fluent French
  7. Both wives were known for having high taste in clothing and were criticized by their husbands for their spending habits
  8. Both wives had the White House renovated after years of neglect
  9. Both presidents had four children, each having two of their children predecease them
  10. Both presidents' wives lost children (each a son) to death while in the White House

  1. Both the Presidents' children were known to have ridden ponies on the White House lawn
  2. Each had similarly named family members
    1. Lincoln had sons named Robert and Edward
    2. Kennedy had brothers named Robert and Edward
  3. Both were related to U.S. Senators
    1. Lincoln's cousin, General Isaac Barnard of Pennsylvania, was first elected in 1827
    2. Kennedy's brother Edward was first elected in 1962 from Massachusetts, and brother Robert was elected in 1964 from New York
  4. Both presidents were related to Democratic U.S. Attornies General who graduated from Harvard University
    1. Lincoln was related to Levi Lincoln, Sr., who served under Jefferson
    2. Robert Kennedy filled the post during his brother's Presidency
  5. Both Presidents were related to ambassadors to the Court of St. James (Great Britain)
    1. Lincoln's son, Robert T. Lincoln, served during the administration of Benjamin Harrison
    2. Kennedy's father, Joseph P. Kennedy, served during the FDR administration
  6. Both were friends with Illinois Democrats named Adlai E. Stevenson
    1. Lincoln's friend would become Grover Cleveland's vice president
    2. Kennedy's friend would twice be the Democratic party's presidential nominee
  7. Both knew a Dr. Charles Taft
    1. Lincoln was treated by Dr. Charles Sabin Taft, M.D., who was the half-brother of son Tad's playmate and chief surgeon at the Judiciary Square Hospital
    2. Kennedy knew Dr. Charles Phelps Taft, LLD, who was the mayor of Cincinnati, Ohio, and son of President William Howard Taft
  8. Both had friends named Bill Graham
    1. Lincoln's friend was William Mentor Graham, a New Salem, Illinois, schoolteacher
    2. Kennedy knew the prominent evangelist Rev. Billy Graham
