Operation Assassination: Lincolnisms vs. Kennedyms - Part IX

We're celebrating Operation Assassination, a trivia-laden white paper I compiled 25 years ago that indirectly spawned this blog. In 2000, I combined my original paper with material I found online that I published on a GeoCities account. As part of this retrospect, I revisited what I found and republished the information.

The Differences

Everybody was so busy documenting the similar minutia, that nobody kept track of the differences, including:
  1. Both belonged to different political parties
    1. Lincoln was a Republican
    2. Kennedy a Democrat
  2. Both had different family upbringings
    1. Lincoln was from a poor Midwest family
    2. Kennedy from a rich Eastern family
  3. Their fathers had different roles in their political lives
    1. Lincoln's father took no role in his son's political ambitions
    2. Kennedy's father guided his son's political ambitions
  4. Each assassin had different upbringings, too
    1. Booth was well-known, from a prominent family
    2. Oswald was unknown, from a poor family
  5. Each was different in appearance
    1. Lincoln was gangly and homely
    2. Kennedy was athletic and handsome
  6. The presidents' mother died at different points in their lives
    1. Lincoln's birth mother died before him
    2. Kennedy's mother outlived him
  7. Their vice presidents had different upbringings, too
    1. Andrew Johnson was a tailor from Tennessee
    2. Lyndon Johnson was an oilman from Texas
  8. Their combat history
    1. Lincoln did not participate in combat
    2. Kennedy participated in combat in the U.S. armed forces
  9. College:
    1. Lincoln never attended
    2. Kennedy attended Harvard (June 1940)
  10. Results of the election
    1. Lincoln's election divided the country
    2. Kennedy's did not
  11. Travel as president
    1. Lincoln rarely left Washington during his presidency
    2. Kennedy traveled frequently during his presidency
  12. Assassinations occurred at different times in their term
    1. Lincoln was assassinated during his second term
    2. Kennedy was assassinated during his first term
